New community green space
Sandside Community Garden Association was established as a constituted volunteer association in January 2016. It has been turning what was a derelict site in Dumfries into an accessible and welcoming green space for the local community to enjoy. This area is now called Apache Land.
The association received a grant of £6,018 from the Annandale and Nithsdale Community Benefit Company in 2017 to purchase fencing enabling to secure a perimeter fence around the land that was perceived by the community as an eyesore and dumping ground. This gave the site an identity and it has in turn encouraged more members from the community to take part in the project and help transform the site into a vibrant and flourishing garden which now includes an outdoor cooking and eating area, raised flower and vegetable beds, a play area and hosts a variety of community events.
