Funding ‘Coo’ for Crossgates Flying Club

Crossgates Flying Club is one of the largest pigeon racing associations in Fife, and has received several grants from the Mossmorran Wind Farm Ltd Community Fund.

The fund supports community projects that benefit residents living in the Hill of Beath, Cowdenbeath and Crossgates & Mossgreen Community Council areas.

Crossgates Flying Club is a pigeon racing club consisting mainly of retired men although it is open to all ages and encourages new membership. It was established in 1954 to support the development of pigeon flying at all levels and provide opportunities for recreation, competition and community.

The club has 15 active members, doubling participation since 2014.

The club enables members of the community to engage socially, remain active and share a common sense of purpose and identity, which in turn helps to reduce social isolation and improve wellbeing.

Among the grants that Crossgates Flying Club has received, one contributed 50% of the costs towards a new cabin. The group requires two containers; one for storage and one as a club house. This award enabled the group to replace a leaking storage container that was no longer fit for purpose and beyond repair.

Keith Cochrane, a Club member said:

The members of the club are highly delighted with the acquisition and now offers a great deal of peace of mind.

Another grant supported the club to purchase two new electronic timing systems to  allow new members to participate fully in club activities and racing events. The new equipment requires less manual handling and therefore is more manageable for disabled fanciers, improving accessibility and inclusivity for all.

The Mossmorran Wind Farm Community Fund opened in 2016 and grant sizes range from £250 to £2,000. These grants support a range of activities, for example those that enhance the quality of life for local residents, contribute to vibrant, healthy, successful and sustainable communities or that promote community spirit and encourage community activity.
