The Graham Educational Fund - a tradition of support since 1759
Securing the Graham Charitable Society’s Legacy to continue to support students across Glasgow.
The Graham Charitable Society was established in 1759 and, for more than 250 years, has supported access to education in Glasgow for people with a connection to the name ‘Graham’.
When it was founded, the Society operated as what was then known as a “friendly society” — an early form of community-based charity.
Friendly societies were mutual aid organisations in which working people contributed small, regular amounts to a shared fund. Members could draw on this fund during times of hardship such as illness, injury, unemployment, or death.
At a time when there was no state welfare system, these societies provided an essential financial safety net. They ensured that families would not face destitution if a wage earner became sick or died.
The Graham Charitable Society was founded in this same spirit of mutual support, offering those who bore the name a place to turn in times of need.
Securing the Graham Charitable Society’s Legacy
Over the years, the Trustees recognised that the needs had changed, and the best way to manage its charitable work had changed.
They wanted to ensure that the Society’s legacy would continue to be carefully managed, while removing the administrative burden of running a separate charity. Furthermore, charitable law has changed and Trustees recognised the opportunity to widen their impact at the same time.
The decision was therefore made to wind up the Society and transfer its funds to Foundation Scotland.
A New Chapter
The fund will continue its work under a new name — The Graham Educational Fund — ensuring that the Society’s long tradition of support and lineage can continue, but now in a wider and more sustainable way.
The Graham Educational Fund’s priority will continue to be access to education in Glasgow, and it will no doubt be a source of valuable help to many students in the years to come – beyond those with the name of Graham.
Supporting Students Today
In recent years, grants from the charitable society have helped students in many practical ways — from purchasing textbooks and equipment to helping with everyday living costs.
For many recipients, these grants make a significant difference to their ability to continue their studies.
The Graham Educational Fund is looking to increase the value of grants to more students.
Below are a couple of examples where these funds have already made a huge difference to the lives of students:
Student Story: David
David (name changed) received a grant of £450 during his first year studying Software Engineering at the University of Glasgow.
The funding allowed him to purchase a laptop, making it much easier to complete coursework and keep up with his studies. By the end of the year, David had achieved five A grades.
| “I have successfully completed the first year of my course as planned, walking away with five A’s. This wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support provided by the grant.” |
Student Story: Millie
Millie (name changed) received support to cover travel costs for a fourth-year university work placement.
The grant allowed her to travel to the placement she wanted, rather than limiting her to opportunities closer to home.
| “If I did not have the grant, I would not have been able to travel to the location I needed to reach for my placement. Instead, I would have had to find something closer, which would have meant passing up a great opportunity.” |
