From Dissolution to Distribution: A Legacy of Learning for All

  • Category: Legacy

A Dissolved Trust turned Foundation Scotland Fund, embracing the many ways we can learn and grow together.

The Miss Elizabeth Drummond Trust began its mission of advancing education in 1936. When the Trust was later dissolved, its assets were transferred to Foundation Scotland to ensure its charitable purpose could continue for generations to come. This transfer was carried out with the support of the sole Trustee of the original Trust and with the consent of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) in 2009. The Trust was formally removed from the Scottish Charity Register in 2011.

To make a long-term difference, the remaining assets were placed into an invested fund. We use it to gradually top up the Elizabeth Drummond Charitable Fund, which awards grants to a wide range of educational projects across Scotland. These include projects related to academic study, lifelong learning, skills training, and personal and social development.

Here’s a glimpse at some of the wonderful organisations and projects that have been supported:

Equal at Home – Supporting younger generations to challenge gender stereotypes and contribute to a more inclusive society.

Sustaining Dunbar – Providing training and mentoring opportunities for volunteers working with young children and older people.

Newton Stewart Initiative – Delivering workshops to promote traditional crafts and reduce social isolation.

Old Kilpatrick Food Parcels – Creating a digital café where over-60s can learn to use the devices and access online services safely.

Art Space G41 – Running Making Music workshops to provide young people with access to multi-sensory, collaborative, and creative experiences.

Continuing the Trust’s Mission

The move to Foundation Scotland was made with care, collaboration, and a shared commitment to honouring Elizabeth’s legacy. We’re grateful for the trust placed in us to carry this important work forward.

So far, the Elizabeth Drummond Charitable Fund has made over 200 awards through Foundation Scotland, totalling more than £525,000.
