Wind farm funding powering local communities in Aberdeenshire

The Gordonstown Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund has awarded a total of £89,204 to support community projects across two distinct areas in Aberdeenshire.

The Gordonstown Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund has awarded a total of £89,204 to support community projects across two distinct areas in Aberdeenshire.

The Fund, which is provided by renewable energy firm Nadara and administered by Foundation Scotland, has provided significant investment in local facilities, education, and community initiatives.

In the Auchterless, Inverkeithny and Fisherford area, £71,760 was awarded to support two major community projects. Inverkeithny Kirk Preservation Trust received £30,000 for essential maintenance and repairs to the historic church building, including work on the roof, bellcote and stained glass windows. This renovation project aims to preserve the building, which sits in a picturesque location by the River Deveron, for future community use.

Auchterless School Parent Council received £41,760 to ensure good quality educational experiences for local children and support community engagement. Funding will be used for a broad range of resources, including new equipment and pupil learning opportunities, as well as programmes to support community activity.

Marie Dare of Auchterless School Parent Council said:

We are very grateful to the Gordonstown Community Fund for providing much needed investment in our school and area. The grant will go towards sporting, musical and AV equipment, transport for school outings and funding a learn-to swim programme for the entire school for the next 3 years. The fund will also cover provision of some after school activities and all the equipment purchased will also be available for use by the wider community. These new programmes will invigorate the school and provide opportunities for the wider community to come together through events in and outwith the school.

In the Fyvie and Rothienorman area, £17,444 has been distributed across six community organisations. Rothienorman Hall Committee received £4,867 for essential repairs to the community space, while Fyvie FC was awarded £7,000 for grounds maintenance equipment.

Youth initiatives also received strong support, with Formartine United Youth Academy Girls Division securing £1,500 for equipment, and Rothienorman Primary School Parent Partner Group receiving two grants totalling £3,077 for outdoor play equipment and swimming lesson transport. The 1st Rothienorman Brownies were awarded £1,000 to support outdoor activities for young people.

All funding decisions are agreed by a local panel, made up of community members whose local experience and familiarity with the places they live are vital to ensure the Fund remains community focused, and that decisions are made with knowledge and insight.

Chris Lee, Community Funds Adviser at Foundation Scotland said:

These grants represent significant investment in local facilities that are at the heart of our communities. From preserving heritage to enhancing educational opportunities and supporting grassroots sports, each project will deliver lasting benefits for local residents now and in the future.
