Transforming convent land into a community haven

The Beinneun Community Benefit Fund has awarded Fort Augustus and Glenmoriston Community Company (FAGCC) £164,439 to complete the Paths to Play Project that will see the community owned Convent Land transformed into a welcoming connected space for nature and play.

The project includes:

  • 870 metres of mobility-friendly paths, opening the site to residents of all ages and abilities and partially enclosing the new wildflower meadow.
  • An adventure play area, designed with input from local children to inspire outdoor play and creativity.

Patrick Ungless, FAGCC Board member said:

The funding from Foundation Scotland and the Beinneun Wind Farm community fund is making a real difference. It’s allowing us to create a space where everyone can feel included, whether they’re out for a walk, enjoying nature, or watching their children play.

A Project Rooted in Community

The project responds to the priorities identified in the 2018-2023 Community Action Plan, which highlighted the need for better recreational spaces and paths. Recent consultations reaffirmed the community’s strong support, with particular enthusiasm for improving accessibility and creating play opportunities. Local children have played a key role in shaping the adventure play area’s design.

Karen Edwards, Operations Manager said:

It’s been wonderful to see their ideas come to life. They’re excited to have a space they can be proud of - and so are we.

A Focus on Sustainability

In addition to enhancing community well-being, the project prioritises sustainability. Eco-friendly materials and methods will minimise the environmental footprint, while the extended project’s wildflower meadows and tree planting plans will support biodiversity and carbon capture.

Looking Ahead
With funding in place, the project is moving forward, with final designs to be shared at a community engagement event and through community newsletter, Ness News.

Once complete, the community can come together to celebrate the opening of the new paths and play area. The Convent Land: Paths and Play Project represents a lasting legacy for Fort Augustus, creating a space where residents can connect, play, and enjoy the natural world for years to come.

Chris Rose, Convent Land Development Officer said:

This project is about more than inclusive access to the community land and a place for local kids to play; it produces a framework on which future community projects can be developed.
