Biosphere Bikes are celebrating an award of £7,975 from Carrick Futures’ latest grantmaking round to fund the cost of electric bikes for a community bike hire service in Girvan and the surrounding area.

Biosphere Bikes based on the seafront near the Quay Zone was established in 2018 to promote the benefits of cycling and to increase the health and wellbeing of the community of Girvan. A wide variety of bikes are available to hire including adult and children’s bikes, side by side electric tandem bikes and go-karts.

Cycling as an activity, has a positive impact on the environment, the economy, social lives and the health and wellbeing of individuals. This project will help to encourage and reduce daily car journeys, which in turn will help reduce air and noise pollution. It will also lessen the use of fossil fuels and other products that cars require to operate, many of which can make their way into our waterways and have a detrimental impact on the surrounding environment.

There is currently no provision of ability or adapted bicycles in Girvan or the surrounding areas and Biosphere Bikes aims to continue to introduce a variety of bike types. There were over 1,000 bike hires in the summer of 2021 and it is estimated that a minimum of 80 people will benefit from the e-bikes.

“Biosphere Bikes are delighted to receive a grant award from Carrick Futures to purchase a number of e-bikes. The grant will enable us to offer additional services to users from the bike hub, which will benefit Girvan and the surrounding areas. Our organisation is going from strength to strength and this grant will ensure that we continue to further improve the options offered by Biosphere Bikes. We look forward to seeing the bikes in use in the coming months.”
